Dry Needling in Williamsburg

A Solution for Painful Trigger PointsDry needling

Using the same monofilament needles as acupuncture, dry needling is designed to deactivate and desensitize trigger points. Trigger points are persistent, painful areas of hypersensitivity or irritability in your soft tissues (muscles, tendons, fascia) that can feel like a knot that just doesn’t release, no matter how much you rub or massage the area.

Dry needling goes deeper than massage therapy, literally penetrating the trigger points.  Several sessions of needling the trigger point(s) can deactivate them, allowing you to move more freely.  This may mean less pain, better function, and (for athletes) fewer injuries and better performance.

A Cousin to Acupuncture

Dry needling was originally developed by medical doctors who would inject trigger points with anesthetics to deactivate them. They started experimenting without any anesthetic in the needle, hence the name “dry” needling. What these Western doctors discovered is that needling tender points can help to desensitize or deactivate them — something that Chinese acupuncturists have known for thousands of years. In a sense, dry needling is like acupuncture’s cousin, though the technique does not reference acupuncture points or meridians, and dry needling makes no reference to non-Western concepts like “Chi.”

Because trigger points can be painful, dry needling may be uncomfortable. The needles used are monofilament, single-use, sterile, disposable devices about the same size as a human hair. They’re nothing like the injection needles at allopathic (medical) doctors’ offices, which are much larger to accommodate a hollow core. The therapeutic results are well worth any discomfort during the procedure. Dr. Shaye and Dr. Panick have both received advanced training in dry needling and will only recommend it when appropriate.
