Shoulder Pain Relief in Williamsburg
Are you tired of wincing in pain every time you reach for something on a high shelf, roll over in bed, play your favorite sport, or swing your arm while walking? Shoulder pain can be an unwelcome companion that hinders your daily activities and steals your joy, but it doesn’t have to be this way.
Understanding Your Shoulder’s Anatomy and Function
Your shoulders play a crucial role in everyday life – whether you’re tackling chores, keeping up with active grandkids, or enjoying your favorite sport. The shoulder complex consists of bones, muscles, tendons, and nerves working together to provide a remarkable range of motion, but that same freedom of movement comes at a cost: limited stability.
The shoulder attaches to the skeletal framework through the clavicle (collar bone). An injury to this connection results in a “separated shoulder.” The primary shoulder joint is where the humerus (arm bone) sits in the glenoid fossa, almost like a golf ball sitting on a golf tee. This joint is fortified by the labrum, a cartilage rim that provides stability, and four muscles forming a “rotator cuff” that controls movement: the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis.
Common Causes of Shoulder Pain
Shoulder pain can stem from a wide range of sources, including:
- Overuse or repetitive strain: Throwing athletes, for example, often develop shoulder pain not from the force of throwing itself, but from the strain on muscles responsible for decelerating the arm afterward. Repetitive strain on the rotator cuff can easily lead to tendonitis.
- Underuse and inactivity: Inadequate movement can give rise to “frozen shoulder,” characterized by painful tightness and restriction. This often follows periods of immobility such as post-stroke recovery, prolonged sling use, or injury-related rest.
- Mechanical issues: Cartilage tears (especially following dislocations), bone spurs, muscle imbalances, or anatomical variations can cause impingement, a cramped space for the rotator cuff tendons.
- Bursitis: Inflamed fluid-filled sacs (bursae) can further aggravate the shoulder joint.
- Spinal involvement: Nerves from the cervical and thoracic spine control and coordinate shoulder muscle function; and the shoulder complex is highly related to spinal flexibility and alignment. A study published in the British Medical Journal found spinal manipulation to be effective in managing common shoulder complaints, surpassing results from physical therapy alone.
